External Ultrasonic Liposuction vs Internal Ultrasonic Liposuction

Frankly, surgeon's opinions are like noses. They all have one, especially about ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), also called ultrasonic liposuction. Some surgeons believe external UAL isn't worth the effort and expense and some do. Some surgeons don't like UAL, period.

Other surgeons disagree and think that UAL can give excellent results. Some surgeons have even patented methods involving specific amounts of tumescent fluid and frequencies of externally applied ultrasound that they claim can safely remove fat with no risk of burns or damage. They say that damage and trauma is less, but that perhaps swelling and nerve problems may be more persistent.

However, the majority of surgeons who prefer ultrasonic liposuction techniques tend to prefer internal UAL to external UAL. The reason is that ultrasound waves are less effective (or are muffled) by having to pass through other tissue to get to the fat, rather than going directly to the fat.

Certainly, each plastic surgeon seems to hold to a belief that one is better than the other, if they like UAL at all. This is not to say either position is wrong or right. It is safer to go with a surgeon who can perform whatever technique he or she prefers correctly and with good results than to be treated with a more popular or technique by a less-experienced surgeon.
